A delightful recording. -------------------------------------------- Bach's Christmas Oratorio is, of course, a collection of 6 otherwise originally independent cantatas celebrating the joy of birth in general, & the Christian birth with all that that implies for believers in particular. These splendid cantatas were originally intended for performance on Christmas Day; St. Stephen's Day (December 26th); the 3d day of Christmas; New Year's Day; the Sunday after New Year's Day & Epiphany (January 6th). Bach was clear that the cantatas were to be considered as an organic whole: in matters of key, in particular; & of orchestration (the recurring use of timpani & trumpets is notable); & a structure bound by liturgical & musical design. This SACD set from Channel Classics sparkles like a snowflake in the sunshine. It has helped put the SACD format on the map. Jos Van Veldhoven, the Nethelands Bach Society & the Soloists deliver 1 very powerful performance of the set of cantatas that make up the Oratorio. The NBS has a long history of performing Bach's music with conviction & in this recording they certainly deliver the goods. If you are in need of hearing something else besides the usual performances of Handel's Messiah & the usual Christmas carols, you might want to try this recording of J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Like Messiah it helps remind one of the "reason for the season" A lot of credit must go to the folks at Channel Classics the recording & the Book (booklet) that the SACD's come with is a wonderful example of how to really release a recording. The book deserves some mention as it has a number of pictures from the Catharijneconvent Museum that depict the events described in the oratorio. The case this all comes in is no simple paper or plastic thing, no it feels like a fine book should with a cloth cover. I understand they have done the same thing for the St. John Passion too. This recording could easily become a classic. This is definitely 1 of the best Christmas oratorios on the market, both with respect to interpretation & sound quality (SACD). All soloists are very good, even if they cannot compete with the best (as Elly Ameling for Münchinger, & Fritz Wunderlich for Richter).
