Rostropovich was in Boston to perform this dark & enigmatic work with Seiji Ozawa conducting the Boston Symphony in August of 1975 when news came of Shostakovich's death. This recording was made at that time. The great cellist & friend of the composer was moved by the occasion to give an intensely expressive reading of the solo part. The sound could hardly be better. 
One of the best performances of any piece you will ever hear. Written for Rostropovich, he gets the desperate wail in this music most cellist miss. Flashy where it should be, quiet where it should be. Brilliant.
