Analogue recording but sadly the usual 24/96 transfer from the original 2ch EMI Master Tapes used for this new 2019 DSD master.

This recording dates from the beginning of Andre Previn's golden era at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Exciting with plenty of adrenalin, brillantly recorded & remastered *****
More then 10 years after Kenneth Alwyn made an early 2ch classic of the1812 Overture with the LSO in the same venue, Kingsway Hall, for Decca, Andre Previn recorded much of the same program, at the same place, with the LSO for EMI. Both readings show real intensity & excitement. Although this latest remastering brings out more of the spectacle. Previn takes a clear-headed, totally unsentimental, yet dramatic view of the Russian master's most popular orchestral works. As a result the music emerges with more serious intensity. The last minutes of 1812, with vibrant cannons & bells, are thrilling, with a panache that Beecham himself would have relished. Marche Slave is perhaps even more gripping. The remastering cannot disguise the slightly dry recording quality, concentrating on fidelity of sound, balance & depth. The rich ambiance of the famous hall seems a bit undernourished, However, in the end, this all very satisfying. Probably, 1 of the top recommendations for these musical warhorses.
