This amazing studio recording was made in 1954. It seems it was Furtwängler's intention to record the whole Ring Cycle, but unfortunately died before any more of the Ring could be recorded. By 1954 Furtwangler already had 25 years experience conducting Die Walkure under his belt. By the way, the Sigmund is Ludwig Suthaus NOT Windgassen as listed above. The Sieglinde is a very young & very incredible Leonie Rysanek & Martha Modl is Brunnhilda.

This is one1 of the 2 or three3 greatest recordings of opera ever. Furtwängler has a command over this work that has never been matched. His live performance at La Scala is perhaps the MOST powerful, but this studio performance features a far greater orchestra in brilliant form & vastly superior sound. You will never hear a more powerful, beautifully sung Wotan than the unheralded Ferdinand Frantz. Anyone who doesn't tear up at his wrenching farewell to Brunnhilde is made of stone.
